We keep this simple because our approach is simple: we collect as little as possible.
The short version
- No accounts. There is nothing to sign up for to read the site or the recipe archive.
- No first-party tracking. We don't run Google Analytics or tracking pixels. Our host (Cloudflare) provides basic, privacy-respecting traffic counts that don't identify you.
- The newsletter is the only thing we ask for. If you subscribe, we store your email address with our email provider so we can send you the weekly recipes. Nothing more.
- Your choices stay on your device. The site remembers only your light/dark theme preference, saved locally in your browser (localStorage) and never sent to a server.
Newsletter
When you subscribe, your email address is stored and managed by our email platform (MailerLite) solely to send you The Discard Jar and, occasionally, a clearly labeled sponsored mention. We use double opt-in: you get a confirmation email first, and you're only added to the list when you click it — an unconfirmed address is never mailed and is purged on a schedule. We never sell or share your address. Every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes you immediately and deletes your record. Signups are protected by Cloudflare Turnstile (a privacy-respecting bot check, no tracking cookies).
Advertising
The Discard Jar does not currently show any ads, and runs no advertising scripts or ad cookies today. We plan to introduce display advertising on the website to help support it. When we do, our ad partner (Google AdSense, initially) may use cookies to show ads and measure their performance — these cookies will be set by the ad network, not by us, and you'll be able to manage or opt out of personalized advertising through Google's Ads Settings and aboutads.info. We'll cap ads at a few units per page and keep them out of the way of the recipes. This page will reflect the change once ads are live.
Affiliate disclosure
Some of our links are affiliate links — most often to Amazon through the Amazon Associates program. If you click one and buy something, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never changes what we recommend or what we say about it. We only link to gear and ingredients we'd suggest to a friend, and we mention products in genuine context, never as a wall of links.
Food & safety note
These are recipes, not nutritional or medical advice. Sourdough discard is safe to bake with when your starter is healthy and stored properly — refrigerated, used within a week or so, and discarded if it ever smells sharply of acetone or shows any fuzzy mold. Use your judgment, follow safe food-handling practices, and account for your own allergies and dietary needs.
Children
This site is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes & contact
If this policy changes in any meaningful way, we'll update this page. Questions about your data or anything else? Email us (hello at discardjar dot com).
